Cruise Dairy, Day 5 – Bermuda

for everyone

A successful start in Bermuda, depending, of course, on your goals. Ours were minimal: find an open launderette to do some wash and a “real people’s drugstore” to buy a couple items we forgot to pack. The key to being able to truly claim “Mission Accomplished” is to limit said mission. We also wandered around Hamilton, Bermuda, nosed into a few shops, meandered into a real park for Bermudans, and stretched our legs.
The weather is perfect, warm enough for us without being too hot. It appears that 75° in Bermuda is a little warmer, but less humid, than 75° in St. Louis. Carolyn finds the island and town a little claustrophobic with its narrow streets and Brussels-like alleyway malls. But I like it. It’s not so homogenized as stateside; the stores are more independent and unique, the larger ones taking your up, down and around as you peruse their wares. Even the grocery stores had their own kind of flavor, kind of Whole Foods meets Aldi.
Motorbikes vastly outnumber cars but they all actually stop for people in crosswalks. I like the business attire of Bermuda shorts with a dress shirts (the tie, not so much) and I guess I could live with the long socks. Many of the men are also traditionally dressed. More smokers out and about, though.
Tomorrow is the glass-bottom boat tour. Our excursion to the Crystal Caves on Friday was cancelled yesterday (apparently everyone forgot about it being Good Friday when the schedules were made out). Our only option to keep the tour was to cram it into the morning and give ourselves no time for lunch before the boat ride. We’ve just gotten Carolyn’s tender tummy on track and didn’t want to risk a water ride on an empty stomach. So no Crystal Caves. We’re on our own in St. George Friday. Don’t know how much there will be to do, given that Good Friday seems to be a national holiday, not just a religious observance.
